Dave S. was recently named Vice President and General Manager (GM) of San Antonio, Texas. We sat down with him to learn more about his career path with Enterprise and his priorities for his new team.
How did you end up at Enterprise?
After college, I worked for a sales company in Denver. I had a close friend who landed a job at Enterprise as a Management Trainee (MT), moved up quickly, and was always raving about the company. I applied for an MT position in Colorado. It was one of the best decisions I ever made.
In our ongoing series of “Five Question” blogs, we recently sat down with Pete D., Corporate Vice President of European Business Development, to chat about his career journey at Enterprise, discuss his new role and gather his general thoughts about leadership.
1. Tell us about your career journey at Enterprise:
For me, it all started in January 1996. I began my career with Enterprise as a Management Trainee right out of college in Newtown, Massachusetts, and it’s been an exciting ride ever since. I became Branch Manager within my first year and continued to take on expanding roles including Area Manager, Group Marketing Manager in Car Sales and Director of Business Rental – all in an effort to grow and develop as a leader. I left my hometown in Boston and moved to Arizona as Group Vice President in 2010. From there, I ventured overseas to Germany as Corporate Vice President to develop a strategy for growth to support both international and domestic rental demands.
Each year, more than 1,500 college students suit up for the Management Training Internship program at Enterprise. Whether they’re fulfilling a prerequisite or pursuing entrepreneurial dreams, interns gain real-life experience, which paves the way for plentiful opportunities.
Seeing the potential
It wasn’t all that long ago that Tara K. — now Assistant Vice President of Manufacturer and Dealership Business Development — found herself looking for hands-on training. As a senior at New York’s Siena College, Tara had been searching for an internship for a marketing class. Had it not been for the Talent Acquisition Specialists visiting on the first day of classes to help with mock interviews, Tara’s career path might have taken a different course.
“The Enterprise employee I spoke with during that first day of marketing class said she had two intern positions open if I wanted to apply,” Tara recalls. “Initially, I wasn’t sure where an internship with a rental car company would take me, but the more I learned, the more excited I became about the possibilities.”
What are your thoughts on our growth in Europe over the past few years?
Achieving growth starts with a great deal of hard work and a plan, especially in countries where we are starting from scratch and the Enterprise brand is unknown. At this point, each market or country is at a different level of maturity and evolution. In the U.K. for instance, we just celebrated 20 years, while in Spain and France we have owned the businesses for four years.
Many of our franchise countries joined the fold in 2015. Each one will have a different strategy for growth.
Q: Hi Bridget! How did you learn about a career with Enterprise?
A: I was an employee referral. I had just returned home after spending a year teaching in Belize when my brother-in-law said I should apply for the Management Training (MT) program. I had planned to go to law school but ultimately decided managing my own career felt like a better fit.
Derrick M. was a bright young accounting professional looking to start his career with a successful company that offered opportunities for career growth. He had just graduated from the University of Tennessee when he decided to join Enterprise’s East Tennessee Region office in Knoxville in 2012. A year later, his promising career hit a bump in the road.
“I found out that the path to success isn’t always easy, especially early in your career as you learn a new business and adapt to the culture of the company,” Derrick says. “I was struggling with what my next steps would be at Enterprise.”
Airport business has grown substantially in revenue and market share since 2007. How have the airport teams achieved such growth?
I think there are many things that can be attributed to our growth that have kept us ahead of the competition. We have worked hard to make our brands stronger than ever through continued investments in locations, technology and marketing.
In addition, we continue to invest in our most important asset – our people – which helps us provide incredible service to our customers. Because of this level of customer service, our brands have taken the top three spots in the J.D. Power study three years in a row. And as we all know, customer service drives growth.
